Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports

A silver and teal California PBIS Platinum Implementation Award for 2024.

At Chaparral Elementary School, we implement PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) to promote a safe and supportive learning environment. Our guiding principle is simple: “Follow the Three B's – Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe.” Throughout our campus, posters display clear examples of behavior expectations in different areas of the school.

PBIS helps reinforce Chaparral’s behavior expectations, ensuring a smooth, positive, and well-structured school community. Chaparral’s mission is to cultivate a consistent and welcoming environment where every student can thrive academically and socially.

Families play a vital role in this effort. Parents can support Chaparral’s PBIS values by using the same language at home, encouraging respectful, responsible, and safe behavior during conversations about school.

At Chaparral, we use Hot Shot Tickets to recognize and reward students who consistently follow the 3B expectations: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Safe. When a staff member observes a student demonstrating one of the 3Bs, they will fill out a Hot Shot Ticket and present it to the student as positive reinforcement.

Students then place their tickets in their classroom’s Hot Shot bucket for a chance to be selected in the weekly PBIS drawing. Each week, two or more students from every class are chosen as winners and receive a special reward for their positive behavior.

Multi-Tiered System of Support for Behavior (MTSS-B) Program

Vision
We are committed to creating safe, supportive school environments where all students thrive socially, emotionally, and academically. We are preparing them to become lifelong learners, responsible citizens, and engaged community members.

Mission
The K–12 Intervention Counseling program supports the social and emotional development of all students through data-informed, school-based behavioral interventions that foster motivation, confidence, and lifelong learning.

Multi-Tiered Systems of Support for Behavior (MTSS-B)

MTSS is a proactive framework designed to address the academic, behavioral, social, and emotional needs of all students.

The MTSS-B counselor’s role includes:

  • Providing behavioral expertise to school staff

  • Leading the implementation of PBIS systems

  • Using school data to identify student needs

  • Delivering evidence-based, data-driven interventions

  • Connecting students and families to community resources

Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS)

CVUSD uses PBIS—a data-driven, multi-tiered framework—to proactively support positive student behavior and reduce discipline issues.

While each CVUSD school tailors PBIS to meet its unique needs, all campuses include key components such as:

  • Clearly defined behavior expectations

  • Consistent reinforcement systems

  • Data-based decision-making

  • Inclusive support for all students

A pyramid diagram illustrates three levels of prevention: primary, secondary, and tertiary.

Tier 1: Prevention

Goal: Provide preventative age-appropriate activities to ensure that all students within a school, regardless of language, identified needs, or socioeconomic status, develop knowledge and skills that will influence their academic achievement and their social and emotional well-being.

Prevention Activities

  • Classroom Guidance Lessons
  • School-wide assemblies & other school-wide activities
  • Parent education workshops
  • Staff professional development workshops

Tier 2: Focused Support

Goal: Identify systematic, data-driven interventions for students within a school that may be experiencing barriers to their academic success and/or social or emotional well-being.

Targeted Interventions

  • Targeted small group, skill-based counseling
  • Community referrals
  • Conflict mediation
  • Restorative conversations

Tier 3: Individualized Support

Goal: Provide individualized supports to students and families that may be experiencing either long-term needs or immediate circumstances that impact a student’s academic achievement and/or social or emotional well-being.

Individualized Supports

  • Short-term, skill-based individual counseling
  • Individualized classroom support
  • Referrals to other district or outside providers
  • Intervention and assistance in emergencies or when a student is considered at imminent risk for harm.
